In 1855 Linus Yale Jr. had set up his own lock business in Philadelphia and in 1862 introduced the Monitor Lock which became the basis for today’s combination locks. In addition, in 1861 and 1865 he received patents which gave rise to his most important invention the “cylinder lock” which forms the basis of modern pin cylinders.
