The Art Gallery of Hamilton
Hamilton, Ontario
The transformation of the AGH both resolves the gallery's functional challenges and participates in the revitalization of Hamilton's downtown. Based on the concept of a "building around a building", the irregular 1970s construction is given coherence, and the facade is transformed with a composition of bold horizontal and vertical geometric planes. The project also involved partnering with the local steel industry to maximize innovative applications of steel, a traditionally industrial material, within the institutional context. For example, custom gold-plated steel panels were developed to encase the concrete walls resulting in a cost effective solution that transforms what was virtually an invisible, and impenetrable exterior into a visible, iconic landmark.
